How We Help
Working with reclaimed lumber is different from working with new. Our consultation services bridge that knowledge gap so your project runs smoothly from day one.
Project Planning Assistance
Not sure how to incorporate reclaimed wood into your build? We help you plan from the ground up — identifying where reclaimed lumber fits best, what species work for your application, and how to structure your material order to avoid waste and delays.
Species & Grade Selection
Oak, pine, fir, chestnut — each species has distinct characteristics in hardness, grain, color, and workability. We guide you to the right match for your project's structural needs, aesthetic goals, and budget.
Quantity Estimation
Over-ordering wastes money. Under-ordering delays your project. We calculate precise board foot estimates based on your plans, accounting for waste factors specific to reclaimed wood (typically 10-15% over new lumber).
Sustainability Consulting
Building green? We help you document the environmental impact of using reclaimed materials — carbon offset calculations, waste diversion metrics, and materials sourcing narratives for LEED, Living Building Challenge, or other green certifications.
Architect & Builder Support
We work directly with design and construction professionals. Need material samples for a client presentation? Spec sheets for submittals? Custom mockups for approval? We've done it hundreds of times and we move fast.

Case Studies
Real consultation stories from real projects. Here is how our guidance helped clients navigate the complexities of building with reclaimed wood.
Farmhouse Renovation — Clear Lake, IA
A couple purchased a 1920s farmhouse and wanted to install reclaimed wood flooring throughout the main level, approximately 1,400 square feet. They had no experience with reclaimed materials and were unsure about species, finish options, or how to handle the extra waste factor compared to new flooring.
During our initial consultation, we walked them through the differences between red oak, white oak, and heart pine for flooring applications. We recommended reclaimed red oak for its warmth, durability (Janka 1290), and availability at a mid-range price point. We calculated they would need approximately 1,680 board feet to account for 15% waste and transition cuts in a multi-room layout. We provided three sample boards with different finishes — raw, oiled, and polyurethane — so they could make an informed decision.
The homeowners chose a natural hardwax oil finish and placed their order the following week. We milled the flooring in-house as tongue-and-groove at 3/4 x 5 inches, delivered it in two batches to match their installation schedule, and the flooring was installed over three weekends by their local contractor. The total project came in $2,800 under their original budget for new hardwood flooring.
Brewery Taproom — Rochester, MN
A new craft brewery needed 2,600 square feet of reclaimed wall cladding, a 22-foot bar top, and four large ceiling beams for their taproom build-out. The architect had specified reclaimed wood but had not worked with a reclaimed supplier before. They needed material samples for client approval, spec sheets for the general contractor, and a delivery schedule coordinated with a tight 12-week construction timeline.
We assigned a dedicated consultation contact who worked directly with the architect and GC. Within five days, we shipped a sample kit containing six species options for the wall cladding, three beam finishes, and two bar top slab options. We prepared spec sheets with species identification, moisture content certification, structural grading reports for the beams, and finishing recommendations. We then developed a phased delivery schedule: beams first (week 3 of construction), wall cladding next (week 6), and bar top last (week 9).
The project was completed on time and within budget. The architect later told us it was the smoothest reclaimed wood specification process she had experienced. The brewery has since referred two other commercial clients to us, and we now supply reclaimed wood tap handles as a seasonal promotional item for their brand.
Historic Church Restoration — Decorah, IA
A preservation committee was restoring a landmark 1878 Norwegian Lutheran church and needed to replace damaged sections of the original American chestnut wainscoting. The challenge was finding authentic chestnut material in matching dimensions and profile — a species that has been functionally extinct for over a century. The project also needed to meet Secretary of the Interior Standards for Historic Preservation.
Our team inspected the existing wainscoting on site, documented the original profile dimensions and fastening methods, and searched our inventory for compatible chestnut stock. We located 280 board feet of chestnut boards salvaged from a period-appropriate source and confirmed species identity through end-grain analysis. We then milled a custom knife to match the original wainscoting profile within 1/32 inch, accounting for the slight dimensional differences between the 1870s hand-milled original and our machine-milled reproduction. We provided a material provenance letter for the preservation committee files.
The replacement sections were installed by a restoration carpenter and blended seamlessly with the surviving original wainscoting. The Iowa State Historic Preservation Office reviewed the work and confirmed it met all applicable standards. The church committee wrote a letter of commendation and the project was featured in a regional preservation newsletter.
LEED Office Building — Des Moines, IA
A commercial developer building a 40,000-square-foot office building was pursuing LEED Gold certification and needed to document the use of reclaimed materials for credit under the Materials and Resources category. They wanted reclaimed wood for lobby feature walls, conference room ceilings, and common-area millwork, totaling approximately 8,500 board feet. They needed carbon offset calculations, waste diversion documentation, and chain-of-custody paperwork.
Our sustainability consultation covered three areas. First, we helped the project team select species and grades that maximized both visual impact and LEED credit potential. Second, we prepared detailed carbon offset documentation showing that 8,500 board feet of reclaimed lumber represents approximately 9,350 pounds of sequestered CO2 that would have been released through landfill decomposition. Third, we provided chain-of-custody documentation tracing each lot of lumber to its salvage source, including photographs of the original structures and GPS coordinates of the salvage sites.
The building achieved LEED Gold certification with full credit for reclaimed material use. The developer has since specified reclaimed wood for two additional office projects, and our carbon offset documentation template has been adapted for use on three other commercial builds in the region.
What to Prepare Before Your Consultation
You do not need to be an expert to have a productive consultation. But having the following information ready will help us give you the most useful guidance from day one.
Project Description
What are you building or renovating? A brief overview of the project scope — whether it is an accent wall, a full flooring installation, exposed ceiling beams, or exterior cladding — helps us tailor our recommendations from the start.
Approximate Square Footage or Linear Footage
If you know the rough area you need to cover (in square feet for flooring and walls, or linear feet for beams and trim), share that number. It does not need to be exact — a ballpark gets us started on quantity estimates and pricing.
Drawings or Floor Plans (If Available)
If you are working with an architect or designer who has produced drawings, sharing those helps us calculate precise material needs. PDF or even a photo of a hand sketch is fine. If you do not have drawings yet, that is perfectly okay — we can work from verbal descriptions.
Species or Aesthetic Preferences
Do you have a preference for oak versus pine? Light wood versus dark? Rustic character versus clean and contemporary? Even showing us a photo from a magazine or Pinterest board of a look you like gives us a clear starting point for species and grade recommendations.
Budget Range
Knowing your approximate budget for the reclaimed wood component of your project allows us to steer you toward species and grades that deliver the best value. We work with budgets of all sizes and can usually find a great option at any price point.
Timeline
When does the material need to be on site? If you are working with a construction schedule, knowing key dates helps us plan processing, kiln time, and delivery to align with your needs. Rush timelines are doable but cost more, so advance planning saves money.
Location
Your project location affects delivery logistics and cost. An address or at least a city and state allows us to provide accurate delivery estimates and timelines during the consultation.
Photos of Existing Conditions
If you are matching existing reclaimed wood, replacing damaged sections, or working within an existing space, photos of the current conditions are invaluable. They help us match species, color, texture, and dimension before you place an order.
Consultation Topics We Cover
Our consultations are wide-ranging and tailored to your project. Here are ten specific topics our team is equipped to address in depth.
Species Identification & Selection
We help you choose the right wood species based on hardness, grain pattern, color, workability, and cost. Our team can identify over 30 domestic species on sight and advises on which perform best for flooring, walls, beams, furniture, and exterior applications.
Grade & Quality Standards
Understanding lumber grades is essential for setting expectations. We explain the differences between Select, #1 Common, #2 Common, and Character grades, and help you determine which grade delivers the look and performance your project requires.
Quantity Estimation & Waste Factors
Reclaimed wood typically requires a 10-15% waste factor over new lumber due to natural variation in length, width, and usability. We calculate precise board-foot estimates based on your project dimensions, accounting for cuts, transitions, and inevitable culls.
Processing & Milling Options
We walk you through every processing option — planing, profiling, tongue-and-groove, sanding, finishing — and recommend the right level of processing for your application. Some projects benefit from rough-sawn character; others need a precision S4S surface.
Structural Engineering Considerations
Using reclaimed timbers as structural elements requires understanding load-bearing capacity, span tables, and connection details. We provide structural grading for beams and coordinate with your engineer to ensure reclaimed timbers meet code requirements for your application.
Finishing & Maintenance
We advise on the best finish for your reclaimed wood based on its application, exposure, and desired appearance. Options range from raw and untreated to oiled, waxed, stained, or polyurethane-sealed. We also provide maintenance guidance so your wood looks great for decades.
Installation Best Practices
Reclaimed wood installation differs from new lumber in several important ways. We share best practices for acclimation, fastening, expansion gaps, subfloor preparation, and working with dimensional variation that is inherent in salvaged material.
Green Building Certification Support
For LEED, Living Building Challenge, WELL, or other green certification programs, we provide documentation including material sourcing narratives, carbon offset calculations, waste diversion metrics, and chain-of-custody paperwork. Our documentation has supported multiple certified projects across the Midwest.
Budget Optimization
We help you get the most value from your reclaimed wood budget. This might mean choosing a more available species instead of a rare one, mixing grades strategically (Select for visible areas, #2 Common for closets and utility rooms), or phasing your order to take advantage of volume pricing.
Custom Project Design
For unique applications — curved walls, herringbone patterns, mixed-species feature walls, live-edge bar tops, custom stair treads — we collaborate on design, material selection, and fabrication planning. Our team has worked on hundreds of custom installations and can help you think through details you might not have considered.
Post-Consultation Support
Our commitment does not end when the consultation wraps up. We remain a resource throughout your entire project lifecycle and beyond.
Order Support & Tracking
Once you place an order based on our consultation recommendations, you will receive regular updates on processing status, kiln schedule, and delivery timeline. Your consultation contact remains your single point of communication so you never have to re-explain your project to a new person.
Installation Troubleshooting
Questions that come up during installation are common and expected. Is this board too warped to use? How do I handle a width transition between rooms? What is the best adhesive for glue-down over concrete? Call or text us and we will troubleshoot in real time. We have helped contractors solve installation challenges over the phone hundreds of times.
Supplemental Material Orders
Projects sometimes need more material than originally estimated — a design change, an unexpected damaged area, or simply running short on the last room. Because we documented your species, grade, and processing specifications during the original consultation, reordering is fast and seamless. We pull from the same lot when possible to ensure consistency.
Maintenance & Care Guidance
After installation is complete, we provide written maintenance recommendations specific to your wood species and finish type. How often to re-oil, how to clean, what to avoid — a simple one-page care guide that helps your reclaimed wood investment last for generations.
Referral to Trusted Installers
If you need a recommendation for a contractor or installer experienced with reclaimed wood in your area, we maintain a network of trusted professionals across the Midwest. These are builders and flooring specialists we have worked with on past projects and can vouch for their craftsmanship and care with reclaimed materials.
