What to Include in Your Inquiry
The more detail you provide upfront, the faster and more accurately we can respond. Use this checklist to make sure your inquiry includes everything we need to give you a complete quote.
For Buying Lumber
- Species desired (and acceptable alternatives)
- Dimensions — thickness, width, and length (specify nominal or actual)
- Quantity in board feet or linear feet
- Surface finish — rough-sawn, S2S, S4S, T&G, shiplap, etc.
- Grade requirements — structural, select, or character grade
- Application — flooring, paneling, framing, furniture, etc.
- Moisture content requirements (if specific)
- Delivery address and whether you have a forklift on-site
- Timeline — when do you need the material by?
- Budget range (helps us suggest the best options)
For Selling Us Lumber
- Type of structure the wood came from (barn, factory, etc.)
- Approximate age of the structure, if known
- Location of the material (city and state)
- Species, if known (we can help identify if you're not sure)
- Approximate quantity — board feet or number of pieces
- Dimensions of the available boards and/or timbers
- Condition — any rot, insect damage, or paint?
- Photos — at least 3-4 showing the overall lot and close-ups of individual boards
- Access situation — is the lumber stacked and accessible or still in the structure?
- Your timeline — do you need the material removed by a specific date?
Response Times
We take every inquiry seriously and respond as quickly as possible. Here is what you can expect after reaching out.

Initial reply to your inquiry confirming receipt, asking any clarifying questions, and providing an estimated timeline for your full quote. Most inquiries received before 3 PM get a same-day response.
Business Days
Full pricing quote for standard inventory items, including species confirmation, dimensions, availability, and shipping estimate. Custom milling quotes may take an additional day if we need to assess raw stock.
Business Days
On-site evaluation for large sell-to-us inquiries or barn deconstruction assessments. We schedule a visit, evaluate the material in person, and provide a written offer within 2 days of the site visit.
Peak season note: During spring and summer (April through September), inquiry volume increases significantly due to construction season. Response times may extend by 1-2 additional business days during these months. If your project has a tight deadline, please mention that in your initial inquiry so we can prioritize accordingly.
Visiting Our Facility
There is no substitute for seeing and touching the wood in person. We welcome visitors to our Mason City facility and encourage hand-selection for projects where character and appearance matter.

Our facility is located at 2205 15th St SW, Mason City, IA 50401 — just off I-35 at Exit 194. From the exit, head east on US-18 for approximately 1.5 miles, then turn south onto 15th St SW. Our building is on the left, marked with the North Iowa Lumber sign.
From Des Moines: Approximately 2 hours north via I-35. Take Exit 194.
From Minneapolis: Approximately 2.5 hours south via I-35. Take Exit 194.
From Cedar Rapids: Approximately 2 hours northwest via US-218 N and I-35.
What to Expect
Plan for 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the scope of your project. A team member will walk you through our inventory, explain the characteristics of available species, and help you select boards that match your vision.
- Wear closed-toe shoes — this is a working lumber yard
- Bring your project plans, measurements, and any samples you want to match
- A tape measure and moisture meter are helpful but not required — we have both on hand
- If you plan to load material into your own vehicle, bring appropriate tie-downs and a tarp
- Email us ahead of your visit so we can stage the relevant inventory for easy browsing

We deliver throughout the Midwest and ship nationwide for larger orders. Here are estimated delivery times and notes for each state in our primary service area.
Iowa
1-3 business days
Our home state. Same-day delivery available within 75 miles of Mason City for in-stock items. Free delivery on orders over $1,500 statewide.
Minnesota
2-4 business days
Twin Cities metro, Rochester, and southern Minnesota are within our regular delivery routes. Northern Minnesota available via freight carrier.
Wisconsin
3-5 business days
Regular deliveries to Madison, Milwaukee, and La Crosse areas. Western Wisconsin is an easy run from our facility. Eastern Wisconsin adds 1-2 days.
Illinois
3-5 business days
Chicago metro, Rockford, and the Quad Cities are well within our range. We make regular Chicago-area deliveries and can often consolidate shipments.
South Dakota
3-5 business days
Sioux Falls and eastern South Dakota are part of our regular service area. Western South Dakota available via freight carrier with slightly longer transit times.
Nebraska
3-5 business days
Omaha, Lincoln, and eastern Nebraska receive regular deliveries. We can arrange consolidated shipments to reduce freight costs for western Nebraska destinations.
Missouri
4-6 business days
Kansas City and St. Louis metro areas are within our extended delivery range. Northern Missouri along I-35 corridor receives faster service at 3-4 business days.
North Dakota
4-6 business days
Fargo and eastern North Dakota receive deliveries via our Minnesota routes. Central and western North Dakota available via freight carrier.
Nationwide Shipping
For customers outside our primary Midwest service area, we ship anywhere in the continental United States via common carrier (freight truck). Typical transit times for nationwide shipments:
