Every Board, Sorted & Ready
Why Choose Our Products
Every piece of reclaimed wood we sell meets strict quality standards developed over years of salvaging and processing historic timber across the Midwest.
Kiln Dried to 6–8% MC
All of our lumber is kiln dried in our on-site facility to a moisture content of 6–8%, ensuring dimensional stability and eliminating any insects or larvae present in reclaimed wood.
De-nailed & Metal Detected
Every board passes through our industrial metal detector after hand de-nailing. We guarantee our lumber is free from embedded nails, screws, and other hardware that could damage your tools.
Graded & Sorted
We grade all reclaimed lumber according to its structural integrity and aesthetic quality. Our grading system ranges from Select (minimal character marks) to Rustic (heavy patina and nail holes).
Verified Provenance
We document the source of every salvage project. When you buy from North Iowa Lumber, you know exactly which barn, factory, or warehouse your wood came from and roughly when it was built.
Cut-to-Order Available
Need non-standard dimensions? Our in-house mill can plane, rip, and profile reclaimed wood to your exact specifications. No minimum order for beam and mantel projects.
Sustainable by Nature
Every board foot of reclaimed wood we sell is a board foot that did not come from a living tree. Our products carry zero deforestation impact and keep usable timber out of landfills.
Common Applications
Our reclaimed wood products are used in residential, commercial, and public projects across the country. Here are the most popular ways builders, designers, and homeowners put our materials to work.
Residential Flooring
Tongue-and-groove reclaimed flooring adds warmth and character to any home. Popular in living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms where the natural patina of aged wood creates a one-of-a-kind surface.
Accent Walls & Paneling
Reclaimed boards installed as wall cladding bring rustic texture to modern interiors. Mix species and widths for a layered look, or choose a single species for a cleaner, more uniform appearance.
Fireplace Mantels
A hand-hewn beam mounted above a fireplace becomes the focal point of the room. Our mantels range from 4-foot cottage pieces to 12-foot grand-scale timbers for stone fireplaces.
Commercial Fit-Outs
Restaurants, breweries, retail stores, and offices use our reclaimed wood for bar tops, tabletops, wall treatments, and ceiling applications. Reclaimed wood tells a sustainability story that resonates with customers.
Furniture Building
Woodworkers and furniture makers source reclaimed lumber from us for dining tables, bookshelves, desks, and bed frames. The tight grain of old-growth species yields furniture that stands apart from anything made with modern lumber.
Outdoor Structures
Dense, naturally durable species like white oak and heart pine perform well in exterior applications including pergolas, arbors, deck railings, and garden structures. Proper finishing extends their outdoor life even further.
Timber Frame Construction
Our structural-grade reclaimed beams are specified by architects and engineers for post-and-beam homes, barn conversions, and exposed ceiling framing in both new construction and renovation projects.
Architectural Millwork
Crown molding, baseboards, window casings, and door trim milled from reclaimed lumber give any space an heirloom quality. Our custom milling service can match existing historic profiles or create new ones.
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Products
We get these questions every week. If yours is not listed here, give us a call and we will be happy to help.
Is reclaimed wood safe to use indoors?
Absolutely. All of our reclaimed lumber is kiln dried at temperatures exceeding 130°F for a minimum of 72 hours, which eliminates any insects, larvae, mold, or bacteria. The kiln drying process also stabilizes the wood to an interior-safe moisture content of 6–8%. Our wood is clean, safe, and ready for residential and commercial interior use.
How does pricing compare to new hardwood lumber?
Reclaimed lumber typically costs 20–50% more per board foot than comparable new-growth hardwood, depending on species, grade, and processing. However, many of our species — such as American chestnut and old-growth heart pine — are simply unavailable as new lumber at any price. The superior density and grain quality of old-growth reclaimed wood also means it will often outlast modern alternatives, making it a strong long-term value.
Can I visit your yard and pick my own boards?
Yes, and we encourage it. Our yard and warehouse in North Iowa are open to customers Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday mornings by appointment. Bring your project plans and we will walk the inventory with you. Many builders and woodworkers prefer to hand-select boards for grain pattern, color, and character level.
Do you ship outside of Iowa?
We do. We ship reclaimed lumber, beams, and flooring throughout the continental United States via LTL freight. Smaller orders can often go UPS or FedEx. We carefully bundle and shrink-wrap all shipments to prevent damage in transit. Freight quotes are provided at the time of your order and typically run between $150 and $600 depending on weight and destination.
What if I need more material than you currently have in stock?
Our inventory fluctuates as new salvage projects are completed. If we do not have enough of a particular species or dimension in stock, we can usually source it within 2–6 weeks through our network of salvage partners across the Midwest. For large commercial projects, we recommend contacting us early in the design phase so we can reserve or procure the material you need.
Our Quality Promise
At North Iowa Lumber, quality is not a marketing phrase \u2014 it is the foundation of every decision we make. From the moment we assess a salvage site to the moment your order leaves our yard, we hold every piece of wood to a standard that most lumber suppliers never consider. We personally inspect each structure before deconstruction begins, rejecting material that shows signs of excessive rot, insect damage, or chemical contamination. Only sound, usable timber enters our processing pipeline.
In our kiln, we monitor temperature and humidity around the clock. Our metal detection equipment catches ferrous and non-ferrous metals as small as a finishing nail buried two inches deep. Our milling tolerances are held to within 1/32 of an inch on every pass. And when your order is ready, we hand-inspect every board and beam before it is wrapped for pickup or shipping. If a piece does not meet our standards, it does not leave the building.
We back this process with a straightforward guarantee: if any product we sell does not meet the grade and specifications listed on your invoice, we will replace it or refund your money. No arguments, no runaround. That is how business should work, and it is how we have operated since day one.
