How Reclaimed Wood Is Salvaged From Iowa Barns

Drive through rural Iowa and you'll see old barns everywhere, rooflines sagging and siding gone silver with age. Many were built from solid timber, and when they come down, that wood can be reused.

The process usually starts when a landowner decides a structure has to go. A salvage crew looks at the building first: what species the framing and siding are, how much is sound, whether there is rot, paint, or chemical treatment, and how safely it can be taken apart.

Deconstruction works from the top down. Roofing comes off first, then siding is removed board by board, and finally the frame is taken apart. Large beams are rigged and lowered rather than dropped. It is slower than knocking a building over, but far more wood survives intact.

Back at a yard, the wood is sorted by species and size, de-nailed, checked with a metal detector, and dried. Then it can be sold as-is or milled into flooring, paneling, or dimensional boards.

If you have a barn or outbuilding in North Iowa coming down, send a request on our Sell Your Lumber page. A partner supplier in our network can look at whether the wood is worth salvaging.
